“I thoroughly enjoyed my flight at The Gliding Centre.
Very professional and friendly people,
you made me feel very welcome.
Thank you!” - James 2016
Whichever package you choose, your trial lesson will begin with a briefing by your fully qualified instructor who will show you around the aircraft, describe the safety aspects and answer any questions you may have.
After your briefing, the instructor will help you into the aircraft. Friends and family are welcome to take photos or video and our ground team will make sure that they are looked after and kept safe. Once you're ready, the trial flight will begin. After launching, your instructor will show you some of the landmarks in the local area. We are blessed with some beautiful countryside at Husbands Bosworth.
During the flight you will be given the opportunity to take the aircraft controls under the guidance of your instructor, or you can simply choose to sit back and enjoy the ride while the instructor flies. If you like you can record the flight on your camera.
The length of flight depends on the type of launch and the weather conditions on the day. As a rough guide, winch launched trial flights typically last between 5 and 20 minutes, aerotow trial flights typically last between 20 and 30 minutes and motorglider flights are generally 30 minutes long.
At the end of the flight, your instructor will land the aircraft back at the airfield, help you exit the aircraft and then bring you back to the clubhouse where you can enjoy a cuppa in The Flying Pan.
Arranging your trial flight
When you buy a trial lesson from us we will email you a voucher and joining instructions, usually within one working day.
Once you have your voucher, you can then contact our office to book your flight at a time convenient to you. The voucher is valid for twelve months from purchase and is non-refundable or transferrable.
If you have specific dates in mind, we will do our best to meet these, however there may be occasions when we cannot, due to prior bookings or for other reasons. In that case we will agree another suitable date with you.
On the day of your flight, we ask you to phone in and check that flying is going ahead on the day. Sometimes we are unable to fly, typically due to weather challenges, in which case we'll need to reschedule your flight.
** We also offer reduced rates for group bookings. To discuss, please contact our office.**
Got the bug??
Many people enjoy their trial flights so much that they want to go on and do more gliding with us. Recognising this, we offer an incentive to encourage people. If you decide to upgrade your trial flight to a one day or five day course within seven days of your trial flight, we will credit you with 50% of the trial flight cost, against the cost of your course. Please contact our office before booking the course and they will be delighted to help you.
Can anyone take a trial flight?
Due to the design of gliders, we have to adhere to certain limitations:
The absolute maximum passenger weight is 110kg (242lbs). However this includes the weight of clothing, and the parachute which weighs 7kg. If we are uncertain about your weight, we will weigh you before the flight. Please don’t be offended by this, it's important that we operate within the safety guidelines for weight and centre of gravity calculations. You're welcome to come to the airfield and try a glider for size.
If you're over 6ft 3inches, you're likely to be unable to fit into the glider.
If you have any health issues (for example heart conditions or epilepsy) that can result in your incapacitation, it’s important that you discuss this with us in advance and on the day.
Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
If you're uncertain about any of these points, please contact us and we’ll be happy to explain and answer any questions.
